Elderly Turn Tables on Young

Talking About Old Records rocks Nottingham Castle

One 8 sees the launch of the Cultural Olympiad in Nottingham

Come and meet the newest members of the Easy Action Sound System who will be joining Charity Shop DJ and Dr Matt of Nottingham Trent University for an intergenerational mash-up

Over the course of September, Charity Shop DJ and Dr Matt have been working with kids from the Bemrose school in Derby, and with older people from community groups in the city, to find out how music can be a tool of communication between the generations.

On 27th September 2008, these newest members of the Easy Action Sound System will be making the journey to Nottingham and playing together for the first time at One8.

They’ll be playing records, re-enacting album covers, and generally seeing what happens when we get a box of old records and some people together. Come and join the party. And bring your vinyl.

Talking About Old Records at Equality=Respect November 2008

Following our presence at last year’s Equality=Respect conference in the Chesterfield area, Talking About Old Records have been commissioned to put on an intergenerational dance performance at this year’s event at the Winding Wheel, Chesterfield, on November 19th 2008.

We will be working with an intergenerational team of dancers from the North East Derbyshire region, drawn from the ‘Killamarsh Dreams’ youth theatre and the ‘Staveley Seniors’ elder’s forum.

A choreographer will work with these groups to produce an original dance performance, and in addition some of our young DJs will play music over the lunchtime for conference participants to enjoy and dance to.

This is an exciting development for Talking About Old Records, and we are all really looking forward to it!

Charity Shop DJ at Turner Contemporary

Turner Contemporary Project Space 53-57 High Street Margate

Charity Shop DJ will be reclaiming the musical heritage found in Margate's charity shops on 17-18 May 2008. Revive your vinyl!

Press Release::

The unique musical tastes of Margate will be revealed by Charity Shop DJ Andy Jupp on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 May during a weekend residency with Turner Contemporary.

On Saturday 17 May, setting out from Turner Contemporary’s Project Space at 10.30am, Charity Shop DJ will be touring the town’s charity shops with his mobile turntable and sound system. In each shop he’ll be asking the public to uncover their forgotten favourites on vinyl which he will then play for them on the spot. People will be photographed with their record of choice and the images will be added to the Charity Shop DJ online gallery. The day will culminate at 3pm in Cartons Coffee Shop, Regal Walk Shopping Centre with a DJ-ing session featuring some of his musical finds from the day.

On Sunday 18 May, between 2 and 4pm at the Turner Contemporary Project Space, people are invited to bring along their favourite records on vinyl. Charity Shop DJ will play these during the afternoon, along with some of his best finds from Saturday, and dancing will be positively encouraged.

Andy says that: “Some people get their exercise going to the gym, walking or running but personally, I don’t think there’s a better way to exercise than dancing to some great music. It’s all about celebration really and people’s record collections of today are the charity shop records of tomorrow. I hope that over the weekend we’ll be able to create a musical portrait of Margate’s past and present.”

Charity Shop DJ rocks the catwalk at Cambridge Trashion Show

Rags 2 Riches, the most innovative reuse event in Cambridgeshire, took place on 8th June at Manor Community College, Cambridge.

Charity Shop DJ appeared live at the first ever ‘Trashion Show’, an eclectic display of clothes and accessories designed and made entirely from waste materials by students in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.

Charity Shop DJ rocked the catwalk with a live soundtrack of Charity Shop remixes and mash-ups.

The event is a partnership project of Cambridgeshire Community Reuse and Recycling Network
(CCORRN), Manor Community College and Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Waste Partnership (RECAP). It aims to highlight the benefits that reuse and recycling bring to the environment in a funky and innovative way.

Victor Perez, Waste Campaigns Officer for Cambridgeshire County Council on behalf of the RECAP partnership said: "Changing public perceptions of reuse and recycling is crucial if we are to successfully reduce carbon emissions. it is very important that future generations understand the value in waste as a resource and the environmental benefits of reusing and recycling"

"This event has been designed to encourage young people and children to put their creativity and
talent into the environment and to demonstrate that the possibilities of transforming waste into something useful are truly endless"
