The Parliamentary Sessions

all we’re spinning now is the tunes

If we’re going to put the trust back into politics, we can start by communicating with each other

At CharityShop DJ we’re celebrating the music that has shaped us. Here we can see what music is special to our MPs. It’s their chance to communicate something about themselves with each other -  and with us.

The Parliamentary Sessions: Putting the equality back into democracy

On July 11 2007, Charity Shop DJ was invited to Parliament by Arts Council England to document and photograph the favourite records of our elected MPs

The results form a unique and personal archive of image, sound and words

Tony Benn with Guantanamera by the Sandpipers

'Before I die I want to pour my verses from my soul     My Verses of light green and flaming red                   My Verses of light green and flaming red                    With the poor folk of the land I want to cast my lot Guantanamera, Guantanamera, Guantanamera'

Kate Hoey, Labour MP for Vauxhall with Tell me More by Nina Simone

'The most amazing woman singer ever born. I used to work in a record shop in Smithfield, Belfast back in the 60s and played her records all the time. Met her once! What a thrill!'

David Evennett, Conservative MP for Bexleyheath and Crayford with Dusty in Memphis by Dusty Springfield

"Just brilliant. Seen her lots of times. Special lady, amazing"

Philip Dunne, Conservative MP for Ludlow and South Shropshire re-enacts Born in the USA by Bruce Springsteen

"In the early 80's - before I was married - I lived in New York and have extremely fond memories of that time, which, of course, coincided with the height of "The Boss's" powers. "Dancing In The Dark" is a brilliant song!"

Thanks to all the MPs, Lords, Ladies, Bishops, judges and researchers who have contacted us. We’ll get to you asap!
