In 2009, Charity Shop DJ embarked on a journey across Derby, engaging with individuals from all walks of life to uncover the music that had influenced their lives. From pensioners to schoolchildren, BBC presenters to church leaders, and even the president of Derby County Football Club, the project delved into the personal soundtracks that defined the city's diverse community.
On June 4th, at Bar One in Derby, many of these individuals gathered to celebrate the unifying power of music. Schoolchildren from Bemrose School shared DJ sets with pensioners from the Golden Age Club. Divisional Commander Andy Hough of the Derby Constabulary made his debut on the decks, followed by performances from three BBC radio presenters.
The culmination of these interactions was showcased in an exhibition at the Derby Museum and Art Gallery from June 13th to July 12th. Photographs and footage from workshops held across the city were displayed alongside previously unseen artefacts from the museum's collection. Visitors were invited to bring their favourite music or meaningful song lyrics to become part of the exhibition experience.
Charity Shop DJ, led by Derbyshire-based artist Andy Jupp, aimed to strengthen and celebrate communities through music. Andy's work facilitated communication and dialogue across generations, communities, and sectors, taking him from charity shops and care homes to the Houses of Parliament and even Jammu and Kashmir.
