From the shop floor to the dance floor, we were partying in the world's first factory.
As part of Derby Feste 2011 and the Wright of Derby Festival, you were invited to a Surprise Party at the Silk Mill. From the South Bank to the Silk Mill, following a successful stint at London’s Vintage Festival. Step back in time as the world’s first factory is transformed into a 1970s lounge, complete with sofa, stereo, standard lamps - and some surprises.
Browse through our collection of charity shop records and look for the tunes you loved and lost. Party with our resident DJs – or sink into the sofa and have a go on the stereo.
Also featuring Choose your Cheese and the Unlucky Dip.

The Lunar Lounge – a storytelling commission for the Wright of Derby festival with Maria Whatton. Produced by Adverse Camber.
Invent, imagine and experience the Enlightenment through specially commissioned storytelling sessions for the Wright of Derby Festival at Derby's Silk Mill
Do you remember house parties in the 70s? Cheese & pineapple hedgehogs and vol-au-vents, washed down with Blue Nun? As part of the Wright of Derby festival, you were invited to experience the mood of the 1970s turning into the 1790s, in a night of storytelling for adults which invites you to jump back in time twice!
In the setting of the 1970s Lunar Lounge, curated by Charity Shop DJ and Derby Museum and Gallery, storyteller Maria Whatton was telling stories inspired by the 18th Century Lunar Society, the fellowship group who met to share their obsessions with Science, Art and Commerce.
Lunar meetings helped invent new philosophies and technologies which changed the face of our culture for good. Stories from Irish mythology which Maria heard in her own front room will mix with stories of the Lunar men and their friendships, in an informal evening of story sharing and conversation.
